www.sweetsammyers.com/

SAM MYERS played harmonica and sang the blues in the traditional style associated with the Mississippi Delta for more than half a century. In later years he moved to Texas, where his career was rejuvenated; he fronted Anson Funderburgh and the Rockets.
Born in 1936 in Laurel, Mississippi, he lost most of his sight as a result of childhood cataracts and went to a blind school in Jackson, where he learnt to play the drums and trumpet. In 1950 he earned a scholarship to the American Conservatory School of Music in Chicago. He had grown up with the music of the acoustic country bluesmen of the Delta but by this time a new, electrified urban blues was emerging in the clubs of the Chicago South Side, where he spent his nights.

Before long he was sitting in as a drummer with many of the greatest names in Chicago blues, including Jimmy Rogers, Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Little Walter and Elmore James. Myers spent a decade touring with James as part of the Broomdusters and playing on many of his recordings.

He also developed his harmonica and vocal skills, releasing a number of solo singles, including Sleeping In The Ground in 1956. It was later covered by Eric Clapton and Robert Cray, among others.

After James died in 1963, Myers returned to Jackson and spent the next two decades playing local clubs and touring with Sylvia Embrey and the Mississippi All-Stars Blues Band. His career was unexpectedly revived after a meeting in 1982 with Anson Funderburgh, a young Texan blues guitarist who had just formed the Rockets, with a repertoire including Sleeping In The Ground. They kept in touch and when the Rockets’ lead singer left in 1986, Funderburgh invited him to take over vocal duties.

Myers moved to Dallas and fronted Anson Funderburgh and the Rockets for the next two decades, recording eight albums and winning nine W. C. Handy awards, the blues equivalent of the Grammy awards. He was voted Best Harmonica Player in 1988 and Best Vocalist the following year.

He released his first solo album, Coming From The Old School, in 2005 but later that year he had throat cancer diagnosed, and the removal of his larynx left him unable to sing.

April 7, 2008 (Cincinnati, OH) -- Jon Justice will be releasing their long awaited sophomore album, "The Rebound", Friday April 18th at Covington's best venue for live music, Molly Malone's. Shyte Mcflyte, a newly formed Jazz/Blues Hip Hop Fusion group will be kicking off the night at 9:30 sharp. Make sure to bring your dancing shoes for these guys! Entry is FREE with the purchase of "The Rebound" and $5 otherwise.

The new release from Jon Justice is more representative of what he brings to the table as an individual as well as a songwriter and performer. Jon's first album, "Forget About Time", although very good, was admittedly slightly over produced. In his latest effort he has used his current touring band in the studio with him along with producer Phillip Wolfe and an array of great backup singers. This is in contrast to using such well known heavy hitters as Wayne Jackson of the Memphis Horns on the previous record. You are sure to get your money's worth with "The Rebound" as the total track count comes in at a very impressive 14 songs. "The Rebound" will be available at many of your favorite local retailers as well as at www.jonjustice.com but don't miss out on the very first opportunity to get your copy, Friday April 18th at Molly Malone's in Covington, KY.

1. Most Blues begin, "Woke up this morning."

2. "I got a good woman" is a bad way to begin the Blues, 'less you stick something nasty in the next line, like " I got a good woman, with the meanest face in town."

3. The Blues is simple. After you get the first line right, repeat it. Then find something that rhymes ... sort of: "Got a good woman - with the meanest face in town. Got teeth like Margaret Thatcher - and she weigh 500 pound."

4. The Blues are not about choice. You stuck in a ditch, you stuck in a ditch; ain't no way out.

5. Blues cars: Chevys and Cadillacs and broken-down trucks. Blues don't travel in Volvos, BMWs, or Sport Utility Vehicles. Most Blues transportation is a Greyhound bus or a southbound train. Jet aircraft an' state-sponsored motor pools ain't even in the running. Walkin' plays a major part in the blues lifestyle. So does fixin' to die.

6. Teenagers can't sing the Blues. They ain't fixin' to die yet. Adults sing the Blues. In Blues, " adulthood" means being old enough to get the electric chair if you shoot a man in Memphis.

7. Blues can take place in New York City but not in Hawaii or any place in Canada. Hard times in St. Paul or Tucson is just depression. Chicago, St. Louis, and Kansas City still the best places to have the Blues. You cannot have the blues in any place that don't get rain.

8. A man with male pattern baldness ain't the blues. A woman with male pattern baldness is. Breaking your leg cuz you skiing is not the blues. Breaking your leg cuz an alligator be chomping on it is.

9. You can't have no Blues in an office or a shopping mall. The lighting is wrong. Go outside to the parking lot or sit by the dumpster.

10. Good places for the Blues:

a. highway
b. jailhouse
c. empty bed
d. bottom of a whiskey glass

Bad places:

a. Ashrams
b. gallery openings
c. Ivy League institutions
d. golf courses

11. No one will believe it's the Blues if you wear a suit, 'less you happen to be an old ethnic person, and you slept in it.

12. Do you have the right to sing the Blues? Yes, if:

a. you're older than dirt
b. you're blind
c. you shot a man in Memphis
d. you can't be satisfied

No, if:

a. you have all your teeth
b. you were once blind but now can see
c. the man in Memphis lived.
d. you have a retirement plan or trust fund.

13. Blues is not a matter of color. It's a matter of bad luck. Tiger Woods cannot sing the blues. Gary Coleman could. Ugly white people also got a leg up on the blues.

14. If you ask for water and Baby give you gasoline, it's the Blues.

Other acceptable Blues beverages are:

a. wine
b. whiskey or bourbon
c. muddy water
d. black coffee

The following are NOT Blues beverages:

a. mixed drinks
b. kosher wine
c. Snapple
d. sparkling water

15. If it occurs in a cheap motel or a shotgun shack, it's a Blues death. Stabbed in the back by a jealous lover is another Blues way to die. So is the electric chair, substance abuse, and dying lonely on a broken down cot. You can't have a Blues death if you die during a tennis match or getting liposuction.

16. Some Blues names for women:

a. Sadie
b. Big Mama
c. Bessie
d. Fat River Dumpling

17. Some Blues names for men:

a. Joe
b. Willie
c. Little Willie
d. Big Willie

18. Persons with names like Sierra, Sequoia, Auburn, and Rainbow can't sing the Blues no matter how many men they shoot in Memphis.

19. Make your own Blues name (starter kit):

a. name of physical infirmity (Blind, Cripple, Lame, etc.)
b. first name (see above) plus name of fruit (Lemon, Lime, Kiwi, etc.)
c. last name of President (Jefferson, Johnson, Fillmore, etc.)

For example, Blind Lime Jefferson, or Cripple Kiwi Fillmore, etc.

(Well, maybe not "Kiwi.")

20. I don't care how tragic your life: you own a computer, you cannot sing the blues. You best destroy it. Fire, a spilled bottle of Mad Dog, or get out a shotgun. I don't care.

visit www.howlingwolfphotos.com where you may enjoy ninety-nine amazing iconic photos of the mighty Wolf in concert, at home, plus my RARE PORTRAITS only recently-published! Read the moving story of our special connection. And more!

My pics of Wolf were in the Pantheon Press bio, "Moanin' at Midnight" and in the McGwin DVD/Movie "The Howlin' Wolf Story (The Secret History of Rock & Roll."

I also played drums for Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup, Mance Lispcomb, Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee, and some harp lessons from Sonny and Paul Oscher.

I'm currently hoping to have some good working band produce stuff I originally wrote upon Wolf's request but that he didn't get to hear in time. Recently I found the 2 songs Wolf and I did together, just us, in his hotel room... his acoustic full-song country harp is super rockin' and puts to rest forever that lame Musselwhite comment about how "Wolf only knew 5 notes but played them well"... He just happened to have the style and taste to play what was needed and nothing beyond to clutter the vive of his songs... This (on my tapes) is stuff you can't find on his albums... it's him doing the entire (sole) melody, acoustically... and he works it ... it was in part his way of teaching me harp, he told me... to get those licks down... the licks are incredible, the tone is Wolf's own... can't be copied

I can sound somewhat (on harp) like Sonny Boy (II, Rice Miller) who taught Wolf harp, but not as much like Wolf.. but at this age and after lotsa unusual stuff in my life and maybe my testosterone supplementation post mercury poisoning (probably not that heheheh but it doenst hurt to have it ) I can SING very close to how Wolf sang, if I choose to, also taught myself Tuvan throat singing to some degree, not as far as Paul Pengas but I have a way of doing it I plan to use with rock songs in 2008. I started learning harp by playing along with Sonny Boy Williamson (the original) songs and use that older style with some songs when doing concerts .. been away from concerts for a while since giving up playing with Mike Wilhelm, for whom I wrote 3 songs on the Mean Ol Frisco album and played harp on 7 tracks. in the 80's.. hoping to get back into it at last... soon, only doing originals or with a rare cover here and there.

I write and play most genres of music all roots style: folk, rock, blues, country, etc... and some that are kind of unclassifiable but sort of combine klezmer blues and r & b ballads I suppose.

Finally, about Wolf... Wolf's multi-dimensional talents and power plus his creative foresight and tight band leadership allowed him to expand Delta blues beyond even Chicago style, incorporating elements of Tex-Mex, Neo-jazz and Rock and making powerful statements that are with us still, and still as powerful! Be sure to see my site and read the story... it says it much better and a lot more...

Email me to discuss the mighty Wolf, blues or to my photos, etc. OR if you want to help me get some demo songs produced low-cost that could also be stand-alone sales online or at concerts too... ( SF Bay Area CA )

Best to all,

It's been a couple months, but I just had to post this one. January 4th, I got to go see Buddy Guy play at his club, Legends, in Chicago. What a magnificent performance! His daughter, Carlise, opened. Anyway, the guy (pun intended) was on fire! Talking to the crowd, joking around, shooting jokingly lascivious looks at the pretty waitresses, running into the audience and playing guitar solos, even running out into the street and it was a rainy night! He played stuff like, "Goin' Down", "Hoochie Coochie Man", "Country Boy", "The First Time I Met The Blues", "I Got Dreams to Remember"; he even played a little medley of stuff where he did a little bit of "Boom Boom", "Strange Brew" and "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)"; and he ended the night by playing "On A Saturday Night" and singing it with his daughter. He had quite a good backing group as well: a good, solid drummer playing the funkiest beats; a bass player who was laying it down just as funky as the drummer; a keyboardist who was absolutely pounding, matching Buddy note for note; and a young guitarist who could pick it out pretty hot, too! Afterwards, Buddy went behind the merch booth by the doorway and signed autographs, met and talked with people, shook hands. What a night!

I've been very happy with the awesome sound they put out. Twice, one of the speakers gave out and I simply took it to the Creative store downtown and they replaced it for me. They had very good customer service. But the store has closed now. I don't know whether Creative is going out of business or what. Now one of my speakers has gone out again. (I've had the set for close to 10 years). Waaahhh. I don't have a stereo.

I've been looking at replacement systems on amazon.com. I see that for less than $175, I can get a surround sound system with more speakers. Logitech seems to be a popular one, or one that amazon is featuring. Are they reputable in the sound arena? I've never heard of them or seen them in stores when considering sound systems (not that I shop around much). It appears that I'd have to buy an external sound card to handle the power of the bass, if I understand it correctly. I'm not capable of installing an internal sound card. The technical language that goes along with these items on amazon is beyond me--I'm having trouble figuring out just what I'd be buying.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Can you describe what you're using in layman's terms as to what might be a good system for under $150 or $175 at the most? Remember, I'm talking about a sound system for a computer. I'd appreciate any advice you can give me!

Cheers,
Lynne

I've heard this argument several times from several different sources, that white people playing the Blues is not only ridiculous since white people can't jump or sing, but because they are stealing money out of the black bluesman's pocket. This opinion has always bothered me since it smacks of narrowmindedness and racism, but today I realized that neither side probably knew what they were talking about. I decided to do a little research. I wrote down all the blues artists I could think of off the top of my head, and looked up their bios. Didn't go in depth, the short bios on Wickipedia and AllMusic were my main sources. Even though this was only an afternoon worth of research, I found that the average bluesman's story goes something like this: Born in the 1910s or 20s, grew up in a large (I mean like over 10) family working the fields in the south, poor as dirt. Started local at the juke joints, then moved to a big city like Chicago and worked the clubs. Got discovered, enjoyed some popularity and money until the late 50s when blues went out of style. Went back to playing the clubs or got a blue collar job. A few decades later, was dug up by a blues enthusiast and restarted his career which lasted till he died. Had a drinking problem, spent some time in jail, and died of a heart attack in his late 50s or early 60s.
There are a few points to remember here: no prewar musician was given a 10 million dollar 5 record contract. Having $1500 in the bank was considered pretty damn good. And, music is a hard industry. Very few musicians of any genre "make it" and those that do usually don't stay popular and rich till they die. That being said, here's my nonscientific research results:

Name DOB DOD Born poor Died poor

Last night, we went to check out Tom Principato live in Charlottesville, at a very small venue called The Outback Lodge. He's an extraordinary blues-rock player who's played with legends such as Danny Gatton. Sadly, there was 14!! people. Come on, people! Cover was $6, and we were in for 3! h of the best guitar-fueled blues you can find around these days. For those of you unfamiliar, he's on the Jimmy Thackery vibe, meaning blistering guitar work, frantic blues-rock tunes and tasty slow and midtempos, this time infused with a New Orleans flavor (his latest, Guitar Gumbo, get it!). As fans, I think we have a responsability to help these wonderful musicians keep their night jobs by attending the shows, getting stuff directly from them and letting them know that what they do doesn't go unnoticed. All in all, we had a blast. I'm right now uploading a small extract of the concert in youtube. Image quality sucks, but you can hear what you're in next time.

What was the first Blues you were drawn to, and was it Acoustic or Electric Blues that first pulled you in?
Like many, as a young person I was exposed to Electric blues through Paul Butterfield Blues Band, John Mayall, Canned Heat etc...
Actually, I was first introduced to Electric Blues as a teenager, when I found a copy of "Jimi Hendrix: Smash Hits" in a trash-can. I took it home, as I'm a Hendrix fan, and the record had a couple of songs on it I'd never heard before. "Red House" did it for me with that slow funk, and screaming guitar, this tune was so "different" to me than any other Jimi tune. Man, it was great! That tune alone, opened my head up to Blues and set me off to discover people.
I bought my first heavy-duty Blues record "Muddy Waters Live" and it blew me away, I played that record to death.
From then on I discovered Howlin' Wolf, John Lee, Buddy Guy, Sonny Boy, etc...
My first acoustic love was Robert johnson, he pointed the way to the Delta for me, I loved his music, still do. From him I discovered Son House, Charlie Patton, Blind Lemon etc...
What a world of discovery!!!!
What was your journey like, and where did it start?

I suspect that the answer is that it's a traditional song that was adapted by both of them (and probably others as well), but can anyone conform this?

I doubt if anyone can explain why a car company is using a song about a train in its commercials.
In the early 80's where MTV was IT, "Flash Dance" and "Footloose" ruled at the box office, and Phil Collins literally saturated the radio, and Hair-bands were on the rise, Stevie Ray Vaughan was a gift from God to a budding Blues lover like me in the 1980's. He was like fresh air on the radio in those days.
My uncle saw me getting into the blues, and one day he came to me and said "you've gotta hear this guitar player, amazing!" "Texas Flood" had just come out, it was 1983, and I was a confirmed fan within seconds of hearing "Love Struck Baby" coming like flames out of my stereo.
A month later I saw SRV live for the 1st time, I was shattered by the experience. He was brilliant!
I was proud to be wearing a "Texas Flood" tour t-shirt in Art-school back in '83, having people say to me "Who's that?"
I saw SRV perform everytime but once, from '83 until he passed, when he'd come to the Boston area.
I bought every magazine that featured him, looked forward to every record he had coming out.
The last time I saw him was with Jef Beck at the Worchester Centrum, Massachussetts. What a show, I never heard him play like that! Soon after, he was gone.
For guitarists, and Blues fans, it's either love him or hate him, I've gotten into many disagrrements with music fans. I'm a huge fan, I lstill love Stevie Ray Vaughan's music and I miss the person.
I'm remembering him today.....
I was enjoying listening to drummer Hughie Flynt, his muscianship was so fine.
Y'know, drummers in Blues bands don't often get noticed, it's a tough job to have, not much recognition behind the Masters of Guitar, Harp, or Vocals. Hughie Flynt was (or still is?) a bad-ass drummer, he rocked Mayall's band big-time. Also, another unsung drummer from the same generation, Mickey Waller, who played with the 1st Jeff Beck group. Granted, these guys were more jazz oriented, Rock too, but still....

Other great drummers from Blues bands:
Since I was on the topic concerning the Bluesbreakers featuring Clapton.....
Til this day, I still love his playing on that album. It's traditional and Future-Blues happening all at that moment, captured on vinyl in all it's glory, history was being made the moment he plugged a Les Paul into a Marshall, and cranked to 10.
In my opinion, this was his masterpiece. Whether you like or dislike him as a Blues/rock player, Cream virtuosto, solo artist etc... This album alone, his playing is inspired, furious, SMOKING.
This was Electric Blues Guitar personified. Love it or leave it, the birth of the guitar hero happened right then during the making of that record.
He was only 23 years old when he made that recording, whew!!
Yeah sure, some could say he was "borrowing from Buddy Guy, he even did Freddie King's Hide Away" and you can hear that ground-work, but something new for the time was happening there, and it was all Clapton, what he brought to the foundation was his fire and soul. His inspired solos on this record, his feel, tone, phrasing. He wrote scripture here.
It was nice to revisit this album after so long from hearing it last. The sign of any great art is that you can go away, and then come back to it again, and you still get fired up over it, hear new things, and still get knocked on your ass listening to it!
All of the musicians on it are brilliant, Hughie Flynt on drums, John McVie on Bass, even Mayall's strange vocal work on this record.
I still love this record!!

Don't get me wrong-- Huey Lewis seems like a genuinely nice and likeable guy. He's even a bay area local, having lived in Marin. But his music is NOT the blues by any stretch.

Even the catchy hit "If this is it"-- which is as close as it gets to the blues for Huey-- ain't the blues.

I know, I know... he sells records and he's famous. Still, it's a shame that it takes a name like his to sell tickets when legends like Hubert Sumlin and many other talented blues acts take a backseat.
I think it's a sad indicator of where the blues is in the general public's eye.

Hey all,

I just wanted to say that we need to go out to shows, buy CDs, and do what we can to support our favorite local blues acts!

I know that it can be expensive to pay a cover, buy drinks, and buy CDs/tip on top of that... but that's how a lot of these guys make their living! Please be generous if you love the music and appreciate their love of the music.

My blues guitar instructor was telling me how things have gotten much tighter for local blues musicians the past few years... now they must compete with karaoke nights and younger and younger new acts who are willing to perform for free. Nothing wrong with those things, but you can imagine how hard it must be for really good local blues artists who make their music for a living.

Many, many more have day jobs as their primary support and play on the weekends and weeknights for the love of it. I'm not saying that we need to throw money at them, but I think being a musician is a tougher gig than most of us give credit for. If you enjoy their music, please do what you can to show that appreciation with a few bucks or something. It beats the hell out of giving to a homeless crack addict/alcoholic on the street who gives you nothing and has probably broken into your car a couple times.

Movies cost $10 now and last about 80 minutes. You can get them on DVD for ten bucks six months later, and you seldom watch them more than once.

Compare that with a $5 or $10 cover and watching up to 3 or more hours of great blues. (Granted, I usually get drinks, tip, and sometimes get food.. but I do that anyway at bars). For me, there is no comparison.

Doing this will ensure that SF remains a place that supports the arts, loves good music, and continues to draw very good blues acts at a reasonable price.

Jimmie Rdgers
Little Brother Montgomery and many others.

If you are new to Blues music, or like it but never really understood the why and wherefores, here are some very fundamental
rules:

1. Most Blues begin with: "Woke up this morning..."

2. "I got a good woman" is a bad way to begin the Blues, unless you stick something nasty in the next line like, "I got a good woman, with the meanest face in town."

3. The Blues is simple. After you get the first line right, repeat it. Then find something that rhymes - sort of: "Got a good woman with the meanest face in town. Yes, I got a good woman with the meanest face in town. Got teeth like Margaret Thatcher and she weigh 500 pound."

4. The Blues is not about choice. You stuck in a ditch, you stuck in a ditch...ain't no way out.

5. Blues cars: Chevys, Fords, Cadillacs and broken-down trucks. Blues don't travel in Volvos, BMWs, or Sport Utility Vehicles. Most Blues transportation is a Greyhound bus or a southbound train. Jet aircraft and state-sponsored motor pools ain't even in the running. Walkin' plays a major part in the Blues lifestyle. So does fixin' to die.

6. Teenagers can't sing the Blues. They ain't fixin' to die yet. Adults sing the Blues. In Blues, "adulthood" means being old enough to get the electric chair if you shoot a man in Memphis.

7. Blues can take place in New York City but not in Hawaii or anywhere in Canada. Hard times in Minneapolis or Seattle is probably just clinical depression. Chicago, St. Louis, Kansas City, Memphis, and Nawlins are still the best places to have the Blues. You cannot have the Blues in any place that don't get rain.

8. A man with male pattern baldness ain't the Blues. A woman with male pattern baldness is. Breaking your leg 'cause you were skiing is not the Blues. Breaking your leg 'cause a alligator be chomping on it is.

9. You can't have no Blues in an office or a shopping mall. The lighting is wrong. Go outside to the parking lot or sit by the dumpster.

10. Good places for the Blues
a. highway
b. jailhouse
c. empty bed
d. bottom of a whiskey glass

11. Bad places for the Blues
a. Nordstrom
b. gallery openings
c. Ivy League institutions
d. golf courses

12.No one will believe it's the Blues if you wear a suit, 'less you happen to be an old person, and you slept in it.

13. Do you have the right to sing the Blues?
Yes, if:
a. you're older than dirt
b. you're blind
c. you shot a man in Memphis
d. you can't be satisfied

No, if:
a. you have all your teeth
b. you were once blind but now can see
c. the man in Memphis lived
d. you have a 401K or trust fund

14. Blues is not a matter of color. It's a matter of bad luck. Tiger Woods cannot sing the Blues. Sonny Liston could have. Ugly white people also got a leg up on the Blues.

15. If you ask for water and your darlin' gives you gasoline, it's the Blues. Other acceptable Blues beverages are:
a. cheap wine
b. whiskey or bourbon
c. muddy water
d. black coffee

The following are NOT Blues beverages:
a. Perrier
b. Chardonnay
c. Snapple
d. Slim Fast

16. If death occurs in a cheap motel or a shotgun shack, it's a Blues death. Stabbed in the back by a jealous lover is another Blues way to die.
So are the electric chair, substance abuse and dying lonely on a broken-down cot. You can't have a Blues death if you die during a tennis match or while getting liposuction.

17. Some Blues names for women:
a. Sadie
b. Big Mama
c. Bessie
d. Fat River Dumpling

18. Some Blues names for men:
a. Joe
b. Willie
c. Little Willie
d. Big Willie

19. Persons with names like Michelle, Amber, Jennifer, Debbie, and Heather can't sing the Blues no matter how many men they shoot in Memphis.

20. Blues Name Starter Kit
a. name of physical infirmity (Blind, Cripple, Lame, etc.) b. first name (see above) plus name of fruit (Lemon, Lime, Kiwi, etc.) c. last name of President (Jefferson, Johnson, Fillmore, etc.)For example:
Blind Lime Jefferson, Pegleg Lemon Johnson or Cripple Kiwi Fillmore, etc.
(Well, maybe not "Kiwi.")

Starting this Saturday at the Doghouse Heidi Fite and Damon Stone will be teaching a blues class series for those dancers who are interested in the beauty of the slow and sensuality of blues dancing and slow blues music.

Blues (Beginning - Intermediate)
w/Heidi Fite & Damon Stone
Saturdays, March 19, 26, Apr. 2
Time: 7:30-9:00
Cost:$18 per class or $48 for series
(payable on first night)
Cost includes class & admission to dance

Week 1 - The Basics
This week, you'll learn two of the most important concepts in Blues dance - weight transfer and communicating that weight transfer to your partner. You'll learn both vintage and contemporary forms of the basic Blues step and how to relate these basic steps to the music.

Week 2 - Blues Moves
This class introduces a basic Blues vocabulary for the student and adds some flash with slides, dips, and turns. You'll also learn techniques to vary these basic moves so that you can continue to increase your Blues vocabulary, even outside of the classroom.

Week 3 - Blues Musicality
This class is about using the structure of
the music to inform your dance. You'll learn about the use of scale, tension and release, call and response, melody and rhythm to make your blues dancing more musical and add your own personality to the dance.

About Heidi Fite & Damon Stone
Heidi Fite began dancing and teaching in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1999. Her expertise includes Lindy Hop and Blues dance.

Damon Stone has been dancing his entire life. Starting with vernacular Jazz/Blues he went on to Hip-Hop and studied many different dance styles but began focusing primarily on Swing and Blues in 1995.

Both Heidi and Damon have been featured instructors at numerous workshops across the United States and Canada. Their classes focus on solid techniques and clear explanation of fundamental principals, but more important, you'll find their classes to be relaxing, full of humor, and to exhibit a love of dance and a dedication to the learning process.

What is Blues dance?
Blues dance, like Lindy Hop and Swing, originated and evolved from African rhythms and movements. However, Blues dance was never widely practiced as a performance dance in the United States; so it developed and thrived in smoky juke joints and at Blues house parties, giving it a more intimate feel.

There is much variety in Blues music (rural, urban, up-tempo, slow, electric, delta, modern), and, correspondingly, much variety in Blues dances, all with very different nuances and emotions. Those who have not studied modern slow Blues dance other than simply by observation often overlook the nuances of the dance. Blues dance at its best is rooted in subtle physical communication and connection with your partner and is almost impossible to learn to execute well simply by watching.

Blues dance demonstrates the passion of the entire range of human emotions - from sadness to joy - not just sensuality. If you don't have a visceral reaction to the music, your partner, and the environment, then you are missing the true beauty of Blues dance.

Traces the roots of the blues explosion in England from the '30s or so through the '70s, which played a pivotal role in helping American audiences discover the killer music being played by a largely unknown group of folks in their own backyards. Some great live jam sessions w/unexpected guests (Tom Jones, Van Morrison, et al) and classic clips of the good ol' boys doing their thing. Other than Clapton rambling on about his own youthful arrogance (true, but who cares?), the interviews are insightful and the music rocks. Filmed really well, also - guitarists in particular will appreciate the closeups.
