We need to liven this joint up a little, eh?
I am lucky enough to be going to see my second favorite guitar player tomorrow night, Eddie C. Campbell. For those of you who haven't heard him you should check him out. He is one of the architects of the so-called "Westside Sound" of Chicago blues. His tune "Hopes and Dreams" from the ablum of the same name is one of the most beautiful songs ever written.
Although Eddie is my second favorite, I thought I'd ask everyone to vote for their favorites.
Best Guitarist -
Living - Lurrie Bell
Dead - Magic Sam
Best Harp Player -
Living - Carey Bell
Dead - Little Walter
Those are mine. What about yours?

Fri, February 17, 2006 - 3:19 PMThis is a great topic!! I like too many, I can't put them in order. Here's off the top of my head.
Seems like most of my favorites are dead, I'm not very familiar with contemporary players.
Guitarists:
Stevie Ray Vaughan, Robert Johnson, Hubert Sumlin, Mike Bloomfield, Son House, Peter Green, Jeremy Spencer, Eric Clapton, Albert King, Roy Buchanan, T-Bone Walker.
Harp:
Little Walter, Sonny Terry, Sonny-Boy Williamson (Rice Miller) Sugar Blue, James Cotton,
Paul Butterfield.

Not sure they qualify under "blues" but they are great musicians for sure. -

Sat, February 18, 2006 - 3:48 PMI don't think that David Gilmour would fit here as a Blues guitarist, but he;s a wonderful player.
I've loved him for years, he's trully expressive and inventive.
I've never been a fan of J. Geil's Band, so Magic Dick never really did anything for me.

Sat, February 18, 2006 - 2:49 PMJeff Beck, don't really need to say more. Kim Simmonds of Savoy Brown. If you haven't seen Kim play, you owe it to yourself to take in a show. The band is currently on tour. -

Re: Best Guitarist Living/Dead - Best Harp Player Living/Dead
Sat, February 18, 2006 - 3:54 PMI've always been a huge fan of Jeff Beck, and I still am, but I've always been less interested in him as a Blues player. For Rock, Jazz-fusion, he's in a class of his own.
I've always preferred Eric Clapton's "Bluesbreakers" period, as well as Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac, as far as British Blues players go.

Re: Best Guitarist Living/Dead - Best Harp Player Living/Dead
Sun, February 19, 2006 - 3:43 PMBest Guitarist Dead - We are talking Blues here aren't we, otherwise it gets really hard. I'd Pick T-Bone Walker for dead because he added so much more to blues and was original in it, but then in more recent times SRV would have to rate for someone who could play for hours without repeating himself. Alive, I can't answer.
Harp I'd agree with Jimmy Cotton for dead, still alive, I'd like to add a great Kiwi harpist, Brendan Power. I don't think he is that well known internationally, but he is imho a virtuoso, if you asked people like Charlie Musselwhite, they would tell you that he is very highly rated.
