Tue, September 20, 2005 - 8:03 AMI would question if he is better now than ever but he is still a class act. He is an institution. -

Re: B.B.King
Tue, September 20, 2005 - 8:16 AMI was surprised at how good he was. I was expecting to see a legend on the fade, sort of. But he blew the house down! -

Re: B.B.King
Tue, September 20, 2005 - 9:15 AMWell, the man is 80 years old. I saw him earlier this year in San Francisco, and I have to admit that what I saw was a legend on the fade. Not in a really bad way, mind you, but he took maybe 5 complete solos the whole night. His sidemen are terrific, though. B.B. has always had a terrific sense of humor and along with being one of the greatest ever, he's also easily been the blues' greatest ambassador. -

Tue, September 20, 2005 - 9:21 AMYea, his side band was awsome. It was about five years ago when I saw him, class act.

Re: B.B.King
Tue, September 20, 2005 - 9:39 AMI believe most of his sidemen are family members, cousins etc.
I read his autobiography about seven years ago. I found it amazing how humble and honest he is.
He used to sign anyobody's autograph after shows. I am not sure if he still does that.
I have seen him roughly (10) times over the last (20) years including twice with SRV. The last time being last year at a blues festival in SoCal. I wasn't impressed but it was still an honor to be in his presence. -

A-men. It would always be an honor to be in BB King's presence. -

Re: B.B.King
Thu, September 22, 2005 - 10:03 PMHappy Birthday BB!
I've only seen him live once, about 3 years ago. He was muted as I would expect from someone of his age, but he is an institution.
At the end of his gig he handed out a pile of BB King picks and signed a few autographs.
He's been doing it forever, came from a very humble background and has never got bigger than his boots. I've seen lots of recorded shows, master classes, jam sessions etc and have lots of his music. He doesn't have a huge skill repertoire like SRV, but doesn't claim to either.
I was gutted to miss his autobiography signing at Borders in Chicago by one day.
He isn't a great guitarist, but he is great. He is an institution and the fact that he keeps on gigging, including with many young artists is awesome. We have so few living treasures left. I hope he lives to a hundred! -

Re: B.B.King
Fri, October 14, 2005 - 12:37 PMI have never saw BB King in concert but I walked in to his bar/club in Memphis on a Wednesday night roughly 5 years ago was turned onto Memphis/Chicago blues. I wired then over it and still am. He had a local band playing and the place was packed. He has been coming to Portland (Maine) the last two years and been meaning to see him. I hope I get the chance to go see him the next time he comes. The place (Merrill Auditorium) has been recently renovated and the acoustics first thing and the last thing on everyone’s mind during the renovation. I am dying to hear him play.
The other thing I got turned onto was Memphis style bbq ribs at the Rendezvous?
good music, good food -

Fri, October 14, 2005 - 12:46 PMCool,
I need to make it out there. Memphis and Austin are both on my list.
Kingston Mines in Chicago is the best at least in my experience. I also enjoy the Blue Cafe in Long Beach, Ca. My local hangout is the Rhythm Room in Phoenix. -

Re: B.B.King
Tue, October 25, 2005 - 3:59 PMAustin is a blues legend on the fade. THere is little work there for live musicians. Most of the greats who play there tour the world and you can see them other places cheaper. I have lots of friends in the music business there and the only good thing they have to say about the scene is that they get more gigs being FROM Austin than being IN Austin. I lived there for a year and went out of town for most of the great music. The best players in town Steve James, for instance, make their living on the road. -
