Hey group,
I'm listening to a compilation of old blues and folk recordings, this track by Skip James is sending a chill up my back. It's called "Hard Time Killin' Floor Blues."
Whew!

I would if I could, but my computer set-up is old, and I don't have the programs to send a link.
      Sorry!

Skip played at one of the very first Newport Jazz Festivals here in Rhode Island. Is that recording from Newport ??

No, it's not live. This sounds like a studio recording, rough quality though.
It's an awesome song, real powerful and haunting.

I downloaded it and listened to it on MusicMatch (awesome service, I highly recommend). Have to try listening to it again when the baby takes a nap, lol.

I would assume from "The Complete Early recordings of Skip James" disk? It's really one of the best mixes considering. So many labels try to remiove the 'scratch' and along with it goes the rest. this is one of the better ones. Sadly, like many others there never will be a modern level mix for all these recordings that in many cases come from an album no less.

No, I downloaded "Hard Time Killin' Floor", a 2005 collection of all his early recordings. The one you mentioned isn't on Musicmatch.

There's also a great version of this tune on the "O Brother Where Art Thou" soundtrack. But played by Chris King, not Skip James.

That's odd. I have the CD I mentioned. It is:

The Complete Early Recordings of Skip James
                Release Date: Sep 15 1994
                Label: YAZOO
                Catalog No.: 2009
                UPC: 16351200921

It says "1930" on the cover, so perhaps it was a compilation album originally released then? Go to yazoorecords dot com /2009.htm - that't the one I assumed?

Again, sadly with the acetate transfer loss, we will never have what it was like sitting there next to him. But for his music, and perhaps early Son House (for me) it seems fitting. Else, I just can;t imagine it otherwise.
