Week 1 - The Basics
This week, you'll learn two of the most important concepts in Blues dance - weight transfer and communicating that weight transfer to your partner. You'll learn both vintage and contemporary forms of the basic Blues step and how to relate these basic steps to the music.
Week 2 - Blues Moves
This class introduces a basic Blues vocabulary for the student and adds some flash with slides, dips, and turns. You'll also learn techniques to vary these basic moves so that you can continue to increase your Blues vocabulary, even outside of the classroom.
Week 3 - Blues Musicality
This class is about using the structure of
the music to inform your dance. You'll learn about the use of scale, tension and release, call and response, melody and rhythm to make your blues dancing more musical and add your own personality to the dance.
About Heidi Fite & Damon Stone
Heidi Fite began dancing and teaching in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1999. Her expertise includes Lindy Hop and Blues dance.
Damon Stone has been dancing his entire life. Starting with vernacular Jazz/Blues he went on to Hip-Hop and studied many different dance styles but began focusing primarily on Swing and Blues in 1995.
Both Heidi and Damon have been featured instructors at numerous workshops across the United States and Canada. Their classes focus on solid techniques and clear explanation of fundamental principals, but more important, you'll find their classes to be relaxing, full of humor, and to exhibit a love of dance and a dedication to the learning process.
What is Blues dance?
Blues dance, like Lindy Hop and Swing, originated and evolved from African rhythms and movements. However, Blues dance was never widely practiced as a performance dance in the United States; so it developed and thrived in smoky juke joints and at Blues house parties, giving it a more intimate feel.
There is much variety in Blues music (rural, urban, up-tempo, slow, electric, delta, modern), and, correspondingly, much variety in Blues dances, all with very different nuances and emotions. Those who have not studied modern slow Blues dance other than simply by observation often overlook the nuances of the dance. Blues dance at its best is rooted in subtle physical communication and connection with your partner and is almost impossible to learn to execute well simply by watching.
Blues dance demonstrates the passion of the entire range of human emotions - from sadness to joy - not just sensuality. If you don't have a visceral reaction to the music, your partner, and the environment, then you are missing the true beauty of Blues dance.
